Eviction in New Jersey: the Anti-Eviction Act and tenant rights

In most New Jersey rentals, a landlord can only evict for one of the good-cause reasons in the Anti-Eviction Act (N.J.S.A. 2A:18-61.1), and only through the Landlord/Tenant section of the Superior Court, Special Civil Part. Most grounds other than nonpayment require written notice first. Under New Jersey's Rent Security Deposit Act, a landlord can't collect more than 1.5 months' rent as a security deposit, must hold it in an interest-bearing account and must tell the tenant where it is within 30 days. A tenant who sues over a wrongfully withheld deposit can recover double the amount plus costs.
