Employment
If your New Jersey employer did not pay you what you earned, you can generally file a wage complaint with the NJ Department of Labor or sue in Superior Court. Since the 2019 Wage Theft Act, claims can reach back six years, and employees can recover the unpaid wages plus liquidated damages of up to 200% of that amount, along with attorney's fees.

Employment
New Jersey's Conscientious Employee Protection Act (CEPA) protects employees who report, object to or refuse to take part in conduct they reasonably believe is illegal, fraudulent or against a clear public policy. If you were fired, demoted or otherwise punished for it, you generally have one year from the retaliatory act to sue (N.J.S.A. 34:19-5).

Employment
Most New Jersey employees work at will, which means an employer can fire you for a bad reason or no reason at all. A firing becomes illegal when the real reason is something the law protects, such as your race, age or disability, reporting illegal conduct, or a promise in a contract. Deadlines are short: a whistleblower claim under CEPA generally must be filed within one year.
